Education

I hold a degree in Special and Elementary Education from the University of Missouri St Louis and I'm certified in Elementary K-8 and Educable Mentally Handicapped. I've taught first grade and I've also been a Resource Teacher.

Experience

I specialize in k-3rd grade reading for students that have dyslexia or other special needs. I'm trained in the Spire Reading Method and the Orton-Gillingham method. Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia. It is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility. I'm committed to providing multi-sensory instruction of the highest quality, dramatically increasing the literacy skills of your child. I've been tutoring since October and the kindergartner is being promoted to first grade due to our working together. Tutoring has been so much fun and so successful that I'm ready to take on more students.

Hobbies

I'm a great tutor because tutoring is my passion. I have advanced cancer (I don't look or feel sick)and tutoring is my reason for getting up each day. I put a lot of time into my lesson plans, making each lesson interactive, fun, and exciting. I move my student from confusion to mastery of each skill. I build confidence and the students self esteem as they master reading and writing on grade level. It's all very exciting. Can you imagine how much fun it is to hear my student tell me that tutoring is their favorite part of their day or that they used to hate reading but I now it's fun! I started with one student and now I'm ready to add more students but will limit my tutoring to 3 hours per day. I think learning to read is the most important thing a child will master and the more often and more consistent we are able to meet, the better for your child. I'm available all year and strongly suggest that you don't stop tutoring over the summer. I prefer daytime tutoring at the library, Barnes and Noble, the school, your home, or my home. I'll be moving to the Lindbergh and page area in the near future. But I don't mind traveling. I want to be flexible and make this as easy for the parent as possible. I raised three girls and I know how hard it is to fit another activity into a day full of school or camp, lessons, and play dates, while trying to work full- time. The parent and I become a team, working for one purpose, and that's to help your struggling student, become someone that enjoys reading and writing.
