Experience

-At the University of Missouri, I took an intensive, semester-long course on the practice and theory of teaching writing, where I mastered the fundamental tenets of tutoring and teaching writing and fostered an acute attention to grammatical, mechanical, and stylistic standards and nuances. While working as a writing tutor at the university’s Student Success Center, I taught undergraduate and graduate students how to compose and revise a variety of academic and professional documents, from term papers and expository essays to blog posts and cover letters. -This previous summer I worked as a Graduate Reference Assistant at Loyola University Chicago’s library, where I frequently provided undergraduates from a variety of academic backgrounds lessons in effective and sustainable research practices. -Some literature courses I have taken include: Medieval Poetry, Renaissance Poetry, 17th Century Poetry and Prose, Victorian Fiction, 20th Century American Poetry, Postmodern Fiction, and Postcolonial Literature. Some literary theory and linguistics courses I have taken include: Introduction to Graduate Studies and Literary Theory, Textual Studies, Seminar on Lacan, Feminist Theory, Structures of American English, Syntax, and a Capstone course on New Media. -In the summer of 2012 I participated in the University of Edinburgh’s Scottish Universities’ International Summer School where I took seminars on British Modernism and Modern Scottish Literature, in which I gained exposure to a vast array of research methodologies and rhetorical strategies from around the world. -GRE Cumulative Score: 310. GRE Verbal Score: 163. -My main reason for wanting to return to tutoring at this point in my career is to share the knowledge and proficiencies I have accrued in different academic contexts with students who are either struggling with writing and reading comprehension, or those who simply want to further hone their skills. From my coursework at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, I am intimately knowledgeable both of teacher expectations for writing and literature assignments, as well as the practical skills necessary for students not only to meet, but exceed these expectations. To this end, my tutoring philosophy is based not on “editing” or “fixing” student writing, but working with them to develop simple, daily habits and skills that develop the aptitudes necessary to succeed in academic writing assignments and literature courses.

-While I am not taking any courses currently, I am still passionately pursuing and extending the research conduction previously during my the course of my Master’s degree to continue to foster my interpretive and compositional skills. This means conducting readings on contemporary American fiction, cultural studies, and literary theory. -Outside of reading, other cultural interests include visual art, live music, and creative cuisine. I also enjoy spending time in the outdoors, and babysitting my two nephews.
