Private tutor in St. Louis, MO

Education

Stanford University graduate, class of 2013. Majored in history. Dabbled in human biology before switching over to a major in history. Post-college work was with College Bound St. Louis, a non-profit dedicated to leading less privileged students to and through college. In my 2 years there, I did significant amounts of tutoring, classroom teaching and lesson planning. Also did much one-on-one youth counseling which, much to the chagrin of my students, sometimes required meetings with parents. To all my St. Louisans, because I know it matters, I went to University City High School, class of 2009.

Experience

Worked at College Bound St. Louis for 2 years mentoring and teaching high school-aged students from low-income backgrounds. Tutoring and classroom teaching were significant components of my job. I want to tutor because the process of seeing a concept click in a student's head is a truly joyous thing. At my old job I was helping a student with Geometry, and when he was at the board mastering the types of problems we were working on, I was sitting behind him pumping my fist in jubilation. It makes the diligent work all worth it. Have tutored previously in Algebra 1, Geometry, History and English. Tutored young musicians during school. Took AP Calculus AB/BC, AP Government, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Literature and AP Language and AP Latin (but don't ask me about Latin...lol). Took both ACT and SAT. ACT: 34. SAT: 2250

Hobbies

Writing is a pastime but I'm trying to make it a career. I love a good story, and would like to be a journalist in a print or radio format. Also, I dabble in spoken word poetry. Music is another favorite pastime - I played lots of jazz violin in high school and in college. Branching out into the guitar world now. I run to stay in shape, though I used to take it VERY seriously. I love a good game of basketball at the rec center. I live for great discussions about anything really, I like to dig into things. Favorite topics are local politics, race relations, Hip-Hop artists, stand-up comedians, American history and Cardinals' baseball.
